Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons (WHO, 1997).

WHO Classification

Type I-A

Removal of the prepuce as well as or excluding the removal of part or the whole of the clitoris.

Type I-B

Removal of the prepuce as well as or excluding the removal of part or the whole of the clitoris.

Type II-A

Removal of the clitoris as well as the partial or whole removal of the labia minora.

Type II-B

Removal of the clitoris as well as the partial or whole removal of the labia minora.

Type III-A

Whole or partial removal of external female genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulation).

Type III-B

Whole or partial removal of external female genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening (infibulation).


Type IV:
Other procedures, non classified (piercing, stretching of clitoris or labia, cauterising through burning the clitoris and the surrounding genital area, etc.)
