l'abolition des mutilations sexuelles

Definition Print E-mail
Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons (World Health Organisation, 1997).

Excision refers to the cutting of the clitoris (and a part or the whole of the labia minora). This is the case in 80% of cases of sexual mutilation. Infibulation is when, after the cutting of the clitoris and the labia minora, the labia majora are sewn together leaving just a small opening for the passing of urine and menstrual blood.
