As well as training and awareness-raising sessions, GAMS offers individual support that is adapted to all women personally affected by genital mutilation and/or forced marriage. GAMS Belgium is first and foremost a meeting point.
The women are received on an individual basis. We take time to get to know them; the first interview is above all an informal meeting. We listen to their stories and their requests. If this goes well, a relationship of trust can be established which will facilitate all subsequent work. This relationship is very important for these women; it is important that they have reference points to help them find their bearings.
From this point onwards the work takes on many aspects.
Often we suggest to the women that they have a consultation with a gynaecologist to deal with their physical suffering. To this end we work with a network of doctors, midwives, gynaecologists with raised awareness and special training to deal with FGM. We try to carry out regular checks to safeguard the integrity of the young girls.
We also direct women to lawyers who specialise in the rights of foreigners and in cases relating to FGM.
